Growing up in a large family I was always surrounded my animals. Whether it was a rabbit or a bird or a cat or a dog, chances are we’ve had one. Of course we didn’t always like sharing the responsibility of taking care of them, who knew that animals could poop so much? Since those days I’ve actually missed not having a pet at home. Animals are some of the most sensitive creatures around; no matter how bad of a day I am having it always warms my soul when I get a minute to play with them. I get very attached to my pets (more than I would like to admit!). If my cat is sick I can hardly think about anything else. I would like to think that my pet is somewhat attached to me as well (or maybe it’s all in my head). As an animal lover, naturally it’s hard for me to choose my favourite animals but I have made an attempt to do just that.
When I thought about my favourite animal, a cat was the first thing to come to mind. I’ve always said that people either like cats or they don’t, there is no in between. Most of the people I know either love being around cats or can’t stand the sight of them, luckily I fall into the former. Having been around several cats as a youngster you may say I am biased but whose keeping track. What I love most about cats is that there are undeniably, completely adorable. Whenever I see kittens I can’t help but staring in awe at their out of this world cuteness. With their tiny paws and cute coloured fur coat, how can you help but love these little ones? Cats hold a special place in my heart because of their unpredictabletemperament. Now anyone who has been scratched by a cat knows what I mean. Cats have such intricate and varied personalities that it’s almost like living with another roommate. When they are hungry they start terrorizing you with their loud meows. When they don’t want to play they hiss at you. However when they feel like being nice they just jump in your bed and curl up with you, a little inappropriate, but what can you do? The other reason I love cats is because they are neat freaks! I don’t have to worry about picking up poop or being scared of them wetting the carpet (unlike their frequently compared counterpart the dog). With cats also find that I can leave them alone for longer periods and they are perfectly independent. However if I need a playmate they are always there to spend time with me, without a doubt cats will always be one of my favourite animals.
While I have not had a lot of experience with this next animal I would still consider the goat one of my favourite animals. Now I’ve seen goats many times before, eating trash, leaving poop unattended. However the first time I was able to touch one up close I was blown away. I visited my uncle’s farm and got a chance to play with some new kids that had just been born. Goats have such a natural frolic and gaiety that is just so heartwarming to witness. One particular baby goat had not quite gotten his footing down right and kept falling down, quite the comical sight if you can imagine it. I also love the bellowing sound that goats make; it almost has a singsong rhyme or rhythm to it. For some reason I can’t help but laugh whenever I hear a kid belting out one of these sounds, it’s so cute and adorable. The one thing I had never really noticed until I got to my uncles far was how soft a goats coat is. Goats are also incrediblyintelligent beings that are able to lean and adapt quickly. They are often curious; if they are locked up in cages they look for ways to escape. They are constantly chewing things to determine what it is. I love goats because I find their personalities to be so joyful and curious. They are incredibly playful and gentle and make for great company.
Now truth be told, I have never seen an elephant in real life, but it is still one on my favourite animals and I will tell you why. One day as I sat in a bus I saw a picture of an elephantwalking in a river in Thailand. There were persons perched on the back of the elephant as he traversed through a river. I must have been ten at the time but that image has stuck with me since because of the beauty of the elephant in nature. Now my dream is to make it to Thailand one day and see an elephant up close in person. For no reason at all that image left such an indelible mark on me and I have never quite been able to shake it. There is something almost majestic and mysterious about an elephant. I mean just their size alone seems imposing and you can only wonder at the magnitude of their strength. Even when you think about their trunks that seems to sounds like a trumpet when blown. What intrigues me most about elephants though is that in spite of this seeming dominant exterior they seem like gentle souls. They are incredibly intelligent and often form close bonds with other elephants during their lifetime. I love that inspite of their strength, elephants are gentle beings that seem to have a calm and peaceful nature that radiates from their souls.
I am always on the lookout for new animals to adopt. By nature I am a recluse so I find that having pets and animals forces to me to come out of my shell by connecting with other animal lovers. There is also something comforting in knowing that no matter what happens your pets will have the same reaction to you as there always have, disdain. I jest. I love being able to come home and play a little with my cats, it helps me forget about the seriousness of life. When you have to take care of a pet I also feel like it makes you less self-centered as you have to spend the time to think about something other than yourself. I find that people who have animals tend to be more kind and gentle, and that comes as no surprise to me.
